Kao Design Group master planned this vineyard, house, and garden to optimize its climatic exposures, soils, views to Mount St. Helena, and panoramic vistas of Napa Valley.  The house and gardens are terraced into the hillside, situated between monumental Redwood stands for natural shading from the morning and afternoon sun.  Passive cooling is achieved through the house’s form and use of concrete thermal mass walls and clerestory glazing with sun-shading louvers.  Passive heating is provided by the colored concrete terraces that soak up the sun to provide warmth for cool evening outdoor gatherings.  A floating curved canopy of steel and wood hovers above the massive southern earthen shotcrete walls, naturally lit and ventilated by clerestory windows and shading louvers. Windows selectively frame the views of natural landscape.  Solar panels power the vineyard and house operations.
