Dr. Kao’s research & seminars on Construction @ HGSD:
Building Construction: Materials and Methods
This lecture + workshop course examined current developments in construction technology, and the art and craft of building assembly and detailing. It introduced a framework to investigate the materials and methods of building construction, and formulates design strategies responsive to fabrication and construction concerns. How is a building conceived and constructed? What is the nature of the materials? How can design thinking engage and relate to the fabrication and construction process? Through Case Studies, select buildings’ construction is analyzed as the translation of design intentions into built realities. The student teams analyzed select architects’ construction documents, built scale framing models, and full size building details.
Concept v. Constructs: Frank Lloyd Wright and His Contemporaries
This research seminar investigated the role of technology and experimentation in construction. Design case studies focused on works by Wright, Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler, Keck + Keck, Buckminster Fuller, and Jean Prouvé.
