This remote forest-edge spa creates a private Zen-like retreat, offering distant views across the bay to the Berkeley Hills. The project treads lightly on the land, minimizing disturbance to the wooded site, and is landscaped with low watering native plantings. Recycled woods, reclaimed construction waste stone slabs, bathtub, and low cement concrete works are natural and enduring. High efficiency mechanical systems support responsive micro-climatic design strategies. The roof and exterior shade curtains offer full passive cooling and heat gain and can be tuned for optimal shading and daylighting. Concealed solar hot water panels warm the pool to extend seasonal uses. The thermal mass of the concrete stores heat in the winter and protects the interior in the summer days.
