The house is conceived as four pavilions set into the sloped meadow, with a native grass field and wild flowers. This family’s lifestyle is translated into pavilions for living, master, guest, and spa. The spaces are calm and contemplative, opening to vistas of the Marin woods and ravine. The buildings are clustered, forming interpenetrating exterior and interior spaces, interconnected by translucent canopies. Tuned to the micro-climate, strategic roof overhangs and exterior curtain screens open for winter heat gain and shade for the summer sun. Photovoltaic panels meet the energy demands, and solar hot water panels are concealed within the cantilevered roofs. Concrete walls are made with a 45 % cement reduction mix. The project incorporates recycled steel, reclaimed Redwood and Douglas Fir timbers, bamboo millwork, and discarded stones and lights. |
