An economical steel frame box houses the calm modern interior of this suburban Japanese restaurant. The exterior is defined by a striated cladding of cement panels and stained wood weathered trim. Extensive daylight is provided via a corner atrium and clerestory windows. The airy interior is detailed with custom millwork, built-in furniture, and paper and fabric light fixtures. A zero-waste woven wood panel ceiling is suspended, integrated with the building services. Research with a boat builder yielded a canopy of suspended ten to twelve foot long translucent wood veneer light fixtures above the sushi bar, inspired by the light saturated bamboo forest. |
