St. Mary's Pump Station

Needham, MA

The design for the St. Mary’s Pump Station creates two blocks of working space: an Administrative Block and a Utility Block. There is a central corridor which allows for controlled access to all spaces and which links the two sides of the building. Kao Design Group collaborated with BETA Group (a team of engineers and planners) to complete the design of the building and surrounding landscape. The current pump station will continue to be operational during the construction of the new building, and the space between the two buildings will function as a Work Yard.
The project employs daylighting strategies, as well as a large south-facing roof for future photovoltaic panel installation. The high level north-facing clerestory windows allow for natural light without compromising security.
