Dr. Kao’s seminars on Sustainability @ HGSD:
Zero Energy Development, co-taught with Bill Dunster of ZED Factory
This seminar investigated advances in the design and technology of Net Zero Energy Development of Live / Work buildings, its organization, infrastructure, and the corresponding architecture and systems. The workshop examines the process of innovative architectural practice, integrating the research and development of emerging green technologies from concept to integrative living systems’ design and concept engineering. Topics included: Maximizing the passive performance of building fabric, integrating renewable energy systems, pioneering eco-waste treatment concepts and inhabited landscape, engineered components, open-system prefab assembly, building-integrated and on-site renewable energy systems, occupant behavior, and full-cycle material management.
Emerging Green Technology in Building Construction and Systems
This seminar researched advances in renewable energy, materials research and component developments, water conservation strategies, ecological sewage treatment, and waste management strategies.
Design and Engineering Innovations, Co-taught with ARUP engineers
With leading engineers from ARUP, 4 seminars focused on topics in Advanced structural systems, Low energy building engineering, Building cladding prototypes, and Fabric Structures. The teams examined cases of integrative design process, analyzing works and development process in engineering collaborations in select works by ARUP, Frei Otto, Buro Happold, Atelier Ten, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Foster, Rogers, Thomas Herzog, Jean Nouvel and SOM.
